10-year Budget and 30-year Auckland Plan: Transport

The future of Auckland is in your hands

Join Auckland Conversations for two events on 28 February and 22 March when Auckland Council consults on the future of the city in its 10-year Budget and the 30-year Auckland Plan. We need to consider the long term challenges facing Auckland and the outcomes that we want to achieve.

The council is proposing a regional fuel tax to fund investment in Auckland’s transport network and decongest our city, while also considering small targeted rates to protect our environment, improving water quality in our streams, rivers and harbours, and protecting our native trees, birds and animals from disease and pests.

Are these the right priorities? Will they create a world class city?

The first of these events will focus on Transport - is a fuel tax the answer to Auckland’s transport challenge? Or is there another way? And does Auckland have its long-term transport plans right? 

Bernard Hickey, Managing Editor of Newsroom Pro and a Director of Newsroom NZ Ltd, will facilitate this event and will  be joined by Auckland Mayor Phil Goff and a panel of industry experts to discuss and debate Auckland’s transport challenges and the potential solutions available.

Patrick Reynolds

Greater Auckland, Auckland Transport Board

Patrick Reynolds is an Auckland based photographer and urbanist. 

He is the nation’s leading photographer of the built environment. His architectural work can be seen in most leading publications both nationally and internationally, and particularly in a series of substantial illustrated books published by Penguin Random House, including City House Country House [2016] Bungalow [2014], Auckland Art Gallery A Place for Art [2013], Big House Small House [2012], New New Zealand Houses [2007], Homework [2010], and Villa [2009]. He is also known for his expressive work which is included in collections such as Te Papa Tongarewa and the Auckland Art Gallery.

He has lead Auckland specific Urban Design studio courses at the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of Auckland. In 2013 he received a President’s Award from the NZ Institute of Architects for his contributions to the fields of architecture and urban design. 

He is a committee member of Urban Auckland and deputy chair of Greater Auckland, two influential civil society groups dedicated to improving the urban realm. He is a member of the Auckland Council Advisory Panel for Art in Public Places [since 2015], the Auckland City Centre Advisory Board [2017], and a member of the Auckland Transport Board Customer Focus Committee.

Peter Winder

Director, McGredy Winder & Co

Peter is the Director of McGredy Winder & Co, an Auckland based consulting firm specialising in providing advice to the public sector and those that work with it.

Peter is recognised as one of  New Zealand’s leading authorities on local government and provides policy, management, and governance advice to councils across the country. Peter also provides policy and strategy advice to government agencies and to a number of major private sector clients.Amongst many other things, Peter facilitated and project managed the work of the Auckland Consensus Building Group and the Independent Advisory Board on Alternative Transport Funding for Auckland. He was one of the three Commissioners appointed to govern the Kaipara District Council when it got into severe difficulty, and is the Chairman of the Manukau Institute of Technology.

Peter has a significant background in Auckland issues having served as the Chief Executive of the Auckland Regional Council prior to the establishment of the Auckland Council.

Cynthia Gillespie

Executive General Manager, Planning & Investment, Auckland Transport

Cynthia commenced with Auckland Transport in July 2017 after over 25 years’ experience in commercial and government sectors at the Australian Federal and State levels.

This included senior executive roles in State Government where she was responsible for guiding return on investment for the Commonwealth Games in Queensland, leading the NSW rail integration project for the greenfield rail development and developing significant customer service outcome agendas for public transport.  

Three years spent with KPMG included working closely with government agencies on shaping strategic frameworks that delivered government objectives, synthesizing emerging trends and identifying long-term opportunities.

Cynthia cut her transport teeth as a logistics officer in the Australia Army.  She subsequently developed a passion for understanding how integrating transport components into a systems approach delivered improved transport outcomes for all the community.

Championing innovation and fostering effective working relationships to effect real change for communities is a passion for Cynthia.

Stephen Selwood

Chief Executive, Infrastructure New Zealand

Stephen is the chief executive of Infrastructure New Zealand the peak infrastructure body in New Zealand. He is an expert on the infrastructure sector with a deep understanding of infrastructure governance, strategy, regulation, funding, delivery and management.

He has undertaken extensive research of infrastructure policy implementation and delivery within New Zealand and overseas. Particular areas of expertise include infrastructure industry leadership, productivity, advanced procurement, investment analysis, communications and stakeholder relationship management.

He acts in an advisory capacity to the industry and on government appointed expert advisory groups. He is a member of the NZ Institute of Directors and has held a number of governance positions within the local government sector and charitable organisations.
